HBO’s New ‘Westworld’ Trailer Is Equal Parts ‘Matrix’ and ‘Deadwood’

  • Do you like a little Western in your sci-fi? I’m not talking Firefly here, I’m talking, “an entire Western town simulated inside of a sci-fi world.” If that sounds weird and complicated, that’s because it is. But it also looks awesome.

The new trailer for HBO’s Westworld dropped before Sunday’s Game of Thrones episode, and has fans of expensive genre TV everywhere (read: me) totally psyched. Coming from writer/producers JJ Abrams and Jonathan Nolan (Christopher Nolan’s brother, who co-writes most of Christopher’s projects), the series is set to debut in October.

Wait, Abrams and Nolan? The masters of wildly complicated, mind-bending stuff that either pays off spectacularly or leaves everyone scratching their heads? This could either go really, really well… or be a massive train wreck. Abrams and Damon Lindelof openly admitted that they were making it up as they went along with Lost — here’s hoping Abrams and Nolan have more of a plan this time.

Westworld is based on a 1973 film of the same name written and directed by Michael Crichton. It stars Jimmi Simpson of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and House of Cards fame, plus Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden, Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright, Rodrigo Santoro, and more.

Can’t get enough? There’s a longer version of the trailer available on HBO’s website. (I like the part where it’s completely f*cking insane.) Looks like it’ll be a long wait until October.
