The nomination of Judge Kavanaugh, a man who is currently accused of assaulting three women, has opened up an incredible wound in our nation’s psyche as people are forced to remember their sexual assaults and view the GOP as it decides to do absolutely nothing about it. One of the heroes amongst this traumatic cultural moment has been Dr. Christine Ford. Dr. Ford’s heroic testimony about the sexual assault committed by Judge Kavanaugh when he was 17 and she was 15 struck the natio. When promoting her new film, “A Star is Born”, Lady Gaga toasted Dr. Ford’s bravery and brilliance, and opened up about her own trauma.

The star discussed, much like Ford did in her testimony, of the science of trauma which “takes the trauma and puts in in a box and it files it away and shuts it so that we can survive the pain…”. Said Lady Gaga:

“The brain changes. What it does is it takes the trauma and it puts it in a box and it files it away and shuts it so that we can survive the pain. And it also does a lot of other things. It can cause body pain. It can cause baseline elevations in anxiety. It can cause complete avoidance of not wanting to even remember or think about what happened to you. But what I believe that have seen is that when this woman saw that Judge Kavanaugh was going to be possibly put in the highest position of power in the judicial system of this country, she was triggered, and that box opened. And when that box opened, she was brave enough to share it with the world to protect this country.”

Lady Gaga honors Dr. Ford for her sacrifice on behalf of the nation, and finds it appalling that the GOP so willfully misunderstands trauma and misunderstands the pain that women who have been assaulted feel, revealing she herself is a victim of sexual assault.

The speech left Stephen Colbert speechless, and he thanked her for being there. The pair then toast — possibly to Dr. Ford, or possibly just so the worst imaginable future does not come to pass. It’s a non traditional interview with the star of a big movie, but given we’re living in such horrifying times, maybe it’s the only one that makes sense.
