“It’s been awhile since you have heard from me, but I wanted to wish everyone a happy new year and to thank you for your love and support,” the Instagram caption reads. “Last year was definitely a year of self-reflection, challenges and growth. It’s always those challenges which show you who you are and what you are capable of overcoming.”

She continues the post with “Trust me, it’s not easy, but I am proud of the person I am becoming and look forward to the year ahead. Love you all.”

Just a day later, she posted another Instagram featuring one of her latest “projects,” $75 Puma sneakers. The shoes are part of her recent collection that launched in December with Puma entitled “Strong Girl.” Alongside the “Cali” sneaker that she posed with in an all denim outfit, the line is embodies female empowerment and is designed by Gomez, herself.

In September of 2018, Gomez posted a picture with an Instagram caption updating her 144 million followers that she would be “taking a social media break. Again.”

A month later, she sought mental help after an emotional breakdown while in the hospital. Gomez is no stranger to the hospital as she suffers from lupus. Before she left to get treatment, she was hospitalized twice for her low white blood cell count, likely a result from her kidney transplant in 2017. During one of her hospitalizations is when she realized she needed to confront her emotional and mental health.
