Starbucks to Completely Eliminate Plastic Straws by 2019

Folks, we got one environment… and we are NOT doing well with it, I have got to say. With global warming really flexing its big warm muscles with with 117 degrees Fahrenheit in Los Angeles over the weekend, we’ve got to do something and some of us… are grasping at straws. Or maybe… not grasping at straws? I’m grasping at straws with this metaphor, but still, physically holding straws should be tougher! Boy this is strained, but I digress: Starbucks is banning those big green familiar straws in their locations in order to lessen the consumption of plastic.

Plastic famously does not deteriorate very well, and litters our beaches. The beaches Why, that’s where our fish live! Boo! With fewer straws our oceans are just a little bit cleaner.

Iced drinks at Starbucks will now be served with new straw less lids, and “alternative-material straw options” will also be available. The move should eliminate the use of one billion plastic straws a year. The new lids will first be introduced in both Seattle and Vancouver, and will be implemented in all 28,000 worldwide stories in 2019.

Starbucks has partnered with the World Wildlife Fund to eliminate refuse in oceans, and considering how popular the chain is, this is a very influential and effective move. Good job Starbucks. Good coffee, good straw based morals. Thank you, Starbucks!

What do you think of Starbucks’ decision? Will it help the ocean or will I have to reuse the joke I had earlier and make the downright ridiculous claim that Starbucks is… grasping at straws…
