White Actors Add Their $0.02 To the Hollywood Diversity Debate

The controversy over the lack of any minority actors in the Academy Awards nominations continues to grow. Black celebrities like Spike Lee and Jada Pinkett Smith considered withdrawing their support from this year’s Oscars and host Chris Rock is completely rewriting his monologue for the night to address the outrage.

And now, we’ve reached the part of the discussion where a bunch of white actors start saying what they think and making everybody even more mad. Yay.

The latest to make headlines is Kristen Stewart, whom the internet hated in “Twilight” and then felt bad about hating in “Twilight” and then slut-shamed when she had an affair with her married director and then felt bad about slut-shaming and was just starting to think she was cool again. Here’s what she had to say.

“Instead of sitting around and complaining about that, do something. Go write something, go do something. And that’s easy to say. Like, fuck, it’s hard to get movies made. It’s a huge luxury. Who gets to just make movies? But that subject is just so prevalently everywhere right now, and it’s boring.”

UPDATE: Variety has since corrected themselves and said Stewart was talking about gender equality, not racial diversity – though I don’t think feminists will enjoy the sentiment much more than #OscarsSoWhite activists did.

So many prominent white celebrities have been chiming in on #OscarsSoWhite, it’s been a bit hard to keep up. Here are the big ones.

Michael Caine:

”There’s loads of black actors. You can’t vote for an actor because he’s black. You can’t just say, ‘I’m going to vote for him. He’s not very good, but he’s black. I’ll vote for him.’ You have to give a good performance. … Be patient. Of course it will come. It took me years to get an Oscar.”

Charlotte Rampling:

“[It’s] racist against whites. […] We can never know whether it’s truly the case, but maybe the black actors didn’t deserve to make it to the final list.”

Clint Eastwood:

“All I know is there’s thousands of people in the Academy, and the majority of them haven’t won Oscars. A lot of people are crying, I guess.”

Julie Delpy:

“It’s funny — women can’t talk. I sometimes wish I were African American because people don’t bash them afterward. It’s the hardest to be a woman. Feminists is something people hate above all. Nothing worse than being a woman in this business. I really believe that.”
