  • Asher Roth stops by the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus at SXSW Music 2013 to talk about some of the artists he thinks will blow up in the next year, why social media is important to get music feedback, and deliver bits and pieces of what to expect from his new album!

“I’ve been a fan for most of the week,” Roth says, gushing over amazing performers he’s seen like Farside.

Looking to the future of the music scene, Roth says, “It’s hard to predict the superstars, but a lot of people are going to have a good run because right now, talent prevails.”

In terms of his own blossoming career, he notes that he’s in a transition phase. “I just want to play outside in a clean air city at 7:30 at night while the sun is setting,” he projects. “That’s where I am right now.”

He admits that he’s had struggles working with major labels because they’re all about big spectacle. So, he’s scaling it back for his next album, “keeping commitment levels low, managing expectations, and just having fun.”

He also praises digital distribution and using social media, because it allows for artists to release content and gain immediate market research based on audience reactions. He says that the suits up high in corporate aren’t his boss, but rather his fans are and he’s passionate about catering to them.

Sometimes that even includes offering his music online for free. “Take the music,” he says, “but come to the show.”
