  • For the second year in a row, What’s Trending streamed live from the Samsung Hope For Children gala blue carpet, where we teamed up with Samsung to fulfill their commitment to causes that help children discover the wonder of life, learning, and our planet.

At the star-studded event, Shira Lazar catches up with NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson about developments with his own Jimmie Johnson Foundation and advice for aspiring NASCAR drivers.

“I’m very fortunate that Samsung, again, is letting the Jimmie Johnson Foundation participate,” he says of the 2013 gala. Johnson created his namesake organization with his wife, Chandra, in 2006. “We try to help out public school systems in the area where we both grew up and then where we live in North Carolina.” He adds, “Technology is everywhere and especially at a young age, so the relationship with Samsung works really well.”

For those aspiring drivers eager to get onto the track, Johnson advises, “It’s very easy to make mistakes early from being too aggressive and crash on lap 10 of 300. Being able to pace yourself and be ready for the end of the race is key.”

He also chats with us about being an avid tweeter and connecting with his fans through social media. “It allows people to see that other side of me that they really don’t get to see from the racetrack.” He describes that other side as “much more relaxed, having fun.” He adds, “Things have calmed down a lot now that I’m a parent.”
