A few days ago, #HeterosexualPrideDay trended on Twitter. Granted, this was thanks mostly to people tweeting jokes or criticisms of the hashtag rather than people actively supporting it, but someone started this thing unironically, and he or she should be ashamed.
We here at What’s Trending are no strangers to celebrating Pride (the real one, not the silly nonsense that is #HeterosexualPrideDay). With that in mind, we say to you: this is dumb, myopic, and in the wake of the attack in Orlando, wildly insensitive.
I’m reminded of an old favorite tweet:
@woodmuffin, whoever you are, you nailed it. We’ve made a lot of progress in the over four years since that tweet was posted, but somehow idiots still don’t get this very basic point. Pride is not about denigration, it’s about celebration.
“But why can’t I get celebrated for my non-marginalized identity?” a strawman asks. Because that part of your identity isn’t something that threatens your very rights and existence. Of course you should love yourself for who you are. But until people start with en masse discrimination against people for being straight — something I highly doubt will ever happen — you don’t have anything for your pride to push back against.
So I say to you, fellow heterosexuals: chill the hell out. Let those marginalized voices have their month. And quit whining about not getting invited to the fun, gay party.
What do you think? Should we celebrate heterosexual pride? Let us know in the comments below or @WhatsTrending on Twitter!
