  • The Donald Trump legal team makes plenty of mistakes. There was the time they allegedly stole Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World.” Then there was the time Melania Trump may have inadvertently revealed she broke immigration law. When interviewed on CNN recently, Trump’s top lawyer Michael Cohen caught flak not for making a legal mistake, but for being a big dumb bully. Our host RJ Aguiar has a breakdown of the story in the video above, but the original video is worth watching too because it is just *pantomimes kissing fingertips like I just ate a fine steak*.

Here’s a video clip from Cohen’s CNN interview:

  • I haven’t seen that kind of bullsh*t tough-guy bravado coming from a lawyer since Howard from Better Call Saul. Here’s a transcript of the relevant portion:

KEILAR: You guys are down. And it makes sense that—

    COHEN: Says who?

    KEILAR: Polls—

    COHEN (interrupting): Says who?

KEILAR: —most of them. All of them?

(Silence long enough for us to wonder if Cohen needs to be unplugged and plugged back in again.)

    COHEN: Says who?

His remarks immediately became a meme and a trending hashtag (#SaysWho). Check out the video above for some of the best examples. Right now, though, I want to turn your attention to Cohen specifically.

Let’s go back to the other time Michael Cohen got himself into the headlines. Last year, The Daily Beast interviewed Cohen about remarks made by Trump’s ex-wife Ivana, who once described an incident between them in 1989 as “rape.” Here’s how Cohen defended his boss (emphasis added):

“You’re talking about the frontrunner for the GOP, presidential candidate, as well as a private individual who never raped anybody. And, of course, understand that by the very definition, you can’t rape your spouse… It is true… You cannot rape your spouse. And there’s very clear case law.

Cohen’s remarks are, of course, patently untrue. Marital rape has been illegal in all 50 states since 1993. In Trump’s home state of New York specifically, the exemption to rape laws in case of marriage was struck down as unconstitutional in 1984. In other words, there’s no possible interpretation of law whereby, in 1989 or today, Cohen’s remarks would have a shred of truth to them.

More importantly: what the f*ck? Why would anyone say or believe that ever?

Anyway, Michael Cohen is a bully and an asshole, and I’m glad his douchebaggery is being captured in meme form. Says who? Says me.
