After I learned that Sweden defeated the U.S. (2-1) in the Women’s World Cup yesterday, forcing the Americans to face the intimidating Brazil team in the quarterfinals, I did what I always do: headed over to Twitter to see how people were reacting.
Now I get that the Women’s World Cup is not the Super Bowl or, even, ahem, the Men’s World Cup, but I have to admit, I was pretty shocked when I realized that the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest on the 4th of July generated way more buzz than the U.S. team’s surprising loss. Not even my favorite comedians found it fodder-worthy and they’re usually dying for material.
Those who did take to Twitter? They seemed only to want to talk about how no one cares.
In fact, the only thing people on Twitter do seem to care about it is that because of the heat in Qatar, FIFA may allow matches at the 2022 World Cup finals to be played over three 30-minute periods.
Well that, and which musical act should perform at the 2014 World Cup.
What do you think? Are you watching the Women’s World Cup? Do you care what happens to the U.S. team? And most importantly, who do you want to sing in 2014? I’m casting my vote for Justin Bieber. Except, you know, not really.
