Fans of “The Hunger Games” trilogy got a special treat during MTV’s Video Music Awards. The first trailer for the much-anticipated first film in the series, “Hunger Games,” aired during the VMA’s to cheers. Star Jennifer Lawrence couldn’t attend because the film is still shooting, but she spoke to the audience via video. The film is due out March 23, 2012.
While we are sure this trailer is entertaining fans, the trailer barely tells newcomers anything about the movie. “The Hunger Games” takes place in a dystopian future where teens are forced to fight each other to the death on live television.
In the trailer, Lawrence, who plays Katniss Everdeen, runs through the forest with a bow and arrow, leaving people who know nothing about the film to wonder if a) this is yet another “Robin Hood” adaptation, b) this is the much awaited “The Hobbit” movie or c) a modern day sequel to “The New World” was really necessary.
People who watched the Japanese movie “Battle Royale” might think this movie is just another knock off of the cult classic, but readers of “The Hunger Games” swear there’s a difference. The books have more strategy and suspense while the teens plot to kill each other, while “Battle Royale” thrives in the randomness of having teenagers forced to fight in a battle to the death that they didn’t sign up for. So, yeah, the same movie.
