E!’s Giuliana Rancic Shares Her Battle with Breast Cancer
E! News anchor and reality TV star, Guiliana Rancic, revealed that she’s battling breast cancer on the Today show Monday morning. During an interview with Ann Curry, Rancic explained that her condistion was discovered through her attempt to get pregnant through IVF. About to go into her third round of fertilization, her doctor said she needed to get a mammogram. The 36-year-old was at first resistant because she didn’t think she needed to be checked for breast cancer until she turned 40.
“I went into the hospital in L.A., when they came in to tell me, they said it pretty quickly, they just said, ‘I’m sorry, you have breast cancer.’ It’s what you expect, but so much more, it was like, incredible instant sobbing and the world just crashed down around me. I couldn’t believe it—36 years old, no family history? I couldn’t believe it.”
With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, screening services and programs designed to educate about the disease are being promoted more than ever. The National Breast Cancer Awareness Web site is a year-round resource for patients, survivors, caregivers and the public.
Digital media initiatives are calling on people to share stories of breast cancer survival, as a way to grow supportive online communities. Case in point: Susan G. Komen for the Cure is inviting its Facebook fans to upload videos with its “What You Would Have Missed” app to share special moments they would not have experienced had a loved one not gotten a mammogram. You can follow the online conversation around the campaign by tweeting the hashtag #getscreened.
Rancic is scheduled to have surgery this week, followed by radiation. As for having a child, she’s still optimistic. “I’m not going to give up,” she said. “Now I truly believe God was looking out for me. Had I gotten pregnant, a few years down the line I could have gotten sicker. So the baby saved my life.”
