Foursquare released this snazzy infographic of their growth in 2011. They reached 1 billion check-ins and their community grew from 5 million to over 15 million, with over 500,000 businesses participating in the geo-location check in platform.
Expect more growth from Foursquare in new year. They have partnered with NBC for the upcoming elections to map the 2012 Campaign Trail.
According to one of their investors and tech mogul, Marc Andreesen, there’s a huge opportunity in 2012 for Foursquare and other “local e-commerce platforms, which is bringing online the gigantic number of businesses in the world that aren’t on the Internet today at all.” He continues, “Advertising on Google doesn’t do them any good because it doesn’t matter if people come to their Web site, it’s not how they get business. So there’s going to be a whole set of new companies, like Groupon and Foursquare, that are going to unlock these local businesses that aren’t even online today.”
