Releasing a horror film at the beginning of 2012 may seem like a bit of an odd plan, but with little competition from other films, it may just give “The Devil Inside” a chance to score box office gold.
Released in theatres on Friday, the film is your typical exorcism thriller but with an unconventional twist. Similar to the critically acclaimed “Paranormal Activity”, the film is presented as raw found-footage, adding to its horror appeal.
But a midnight release on Thursday night fooled few, it seems, as numerous people took to Twitter to say that the film was simply not a good one.
The film’s marketing campaign included numerous YouTube videos and terrifying trailers, including a red-band trailer, suitable only for mature audiences. The film even had a Twitter handle, @TweetYourScream, to encourage social media discourse about the film.
While some people were tweeting that the trailer alone was scary enough to keep them from viewing the actual film, the backlash on Twitter might be enough to do the same.
Currently, the movie review aggregating website Rotten Tomatoes has given the film an 8 percent rotten rating score. The website’s synopsis is clear: “The Devil Inside is a cheap, choppy unscary mess.”
