Adele was months removed from a surgery that helped save her astonishing voice, her presence and performance was perhaps the most anticipated of the night. Adele scooped six of the Grammys she was nominated for, including the big three: Record of the Year and Song of the Year for “Rolling in the Deep,” and Album of the year for 21 in 54th edition of the Grammys.
“Thank you so much,” Adele said as she fought back tears, accepting the Album of the Year award. “I just first, want to say, Mom, your girl did good!”
Rockers Foo Fighters snatched up five golden gramophones, including ones for Best Rock Album and Best Rock Performance.
Yet the 54th Grammys were a slight deviation from previous shows, as they began on a somber note: Host LL Cool J asked the audience to join him in a prayer for Whitney Houston, who died on Saturday. While the unexpected death of the six-time winner left many saddened, the show went on. A tribute performance by Jennifer Hudson, who performed one of Houston’s biggest hits in “I Will Always Love You,” received a standing ovation.
On Twitter, the Grammys completely dominated the social media website. There was some initial confusion as the telecast was only shown live in the East Coast, while many in the Central, Midwest and Pacific region were left tweets updating them of the show in real-time followed by a re-run. Topsy cited more than 1 million mentions of Grammys in the past 24 hours.
