ESPN Fires Writer Who Described Lin As “Chink in the Armor”

  • Intentionally racist or not, ESPN writer Antony Federico, who used “A Chink in the Armor” as his headline in story about breakout Asian basketball star, Jeremy Lin, has been fired. Chink, an adjective for expressing a shortcoming or weakness, is also a well-known asian stereotype, and had also been used by news anchor Max Bretos, who has been suspended for 30 days. In a show Wednesday, he asked, “If there is a chink in the armor, where can Lin improve his game?”

Bretos has since apologized, but maintaines his innocence, writing “”My wife is Asian, and I would never intentionally say anything to disrespect her and that community.”

Leave it to the good folks at Saturday Night Live to find a funny way to parody the whole incident (and the whole discussion of stereotypes surrounding Lin’s asian background):
