The 10-year U.S. navy veteran and talented comedian is best known for winning a best-actor Oscar Award for playing a lovesick butcher in the 1955 film Marty.
Borgnine also populated the villain roles of some early 1950s films, most notably From Here to Eternity‘s Fatso Judson. Following stints in action films such as Three Bad Men, The Vikings, and The Dirty Dozen, Borgnine transitioned into television comedy, starring in McHale‘s Navy from 1962 to 1966.
Even after his career high points, Borgnine never really stopped working. In fact, one of his best known projects of late was voicing the superhero Mermaid Mad in Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants.
And that’s just how many tweeps have taken to remembering the actor.
According to Topsy.com, “Ernest Borgnine” has been mentioned over 16,000 times in the past day, with almost 5,000 mentions of “Mermaid Man” and only 3,000 mentions of “Marty.”
