Cable TV Dominates 2012 Primetime Emmy Nominations

  • Cable networks aren’t just for the TV Movie or Miniseries categories anymore.

Thursday morning, Scandal‘s Kerry Washington was joined by this year’s Emmys host Jimmy Kimmel to announce the nominees for the 64th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. Along with the Emmy voters’ decisions to recognize a good deal of new shows, it is also evident that cable programming is taking huge strides in dominating the annual television event.

In fact, the Outstanding Drama Series category was a complete shutout for network television, with not one major network series making the cut.

AMC’s Mad Men (17 nominations), AMC’s Breaking Bad (13 nominations), HBO’s Boardwalk Empire (12 nominations), Showtime’s Homeland (9 nominations), and HBO’s Game of Thrones (11 nominations) are all cable drama shows that have made their stands before, but the cable comedy series inch through impressively this year with solid nominations for:

–HBO’s Girls (Outstanding Comedy Series, Lena Dunham for Outstanding Lead Actress)

–HBO’s Veep (Outstanding Comedy Series, Julia Louis-Dreyfus for Outstanding Lead Actress)

–Showtime’s House of Lies (Don Cheadle for Outstanding Lead Actor)

    Along with some familiar faces:

–FX’s Louie (Louis C.K. for Outstanding Lead Actor)

–HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm (Outstanding Comedy Series, Larry David for Outstanding Lead Actor)

–Showtime’s Nurse Jackie (Outstanding Lead Actress, joined by Merritt Wever for Outstanding Supporting Actress)

And we mustn’t leave out PBS’s Downton Abbey (16 nominations), U.K.’s hit ITV show, which became a cultural craze after its second season aired stateside this January. Lead Actress Michelle Dockery, Lead Actor Hugh Bonneville, and Supporting Actresses Maggie Smith and Joanne Froggatt all picked up nominations this year.

The 64th annual Primetime Emmy Awards will air live on ABC Sunday, Sept. 23, at 7 p.m. ET from the Nokia Theatre in L.A. For a full list of the nominees, visit the Emmys website.
