Equal Pay For Equal Play? Not For The Women’s Soccer Team
The women on the U.S. soccer team get paid a lot less than the men, and they’re just about fed up. Five of the top players are fighting back, and it’s a battle that I’m sure they’ll win. We’re living in a time where women’s rights are raging, and if you oppose them, you won’t stand a chance.
The women filed a federal complaint against U.S. Soccer because they are earning only 40% of what the men’s national team makes. Hope Solo, Carli Lloyd, Becky Sauerbrunn, Alex Morgan, and Megan Rapinoe are the five women who refuse to be discriminated because of their gender. They even said that there were being paid less for bonuses and appearance fees.
The fact that this story is even making headlines upsets me. It’s 2016. Why should we still be reading about how women who are doing the EXACT same work as men, are getting paid less? What makes being a man any more valuable than being a woman? We’ve been fighting for women’s rights for decades, and it still comes down to a gender war.
The women’s soccer team (who, if I may add, has been more successful than the men’s team, winning multiple World Cup championships and Olympic competitions) puts in the same effort in practices and appearances as the men do, so I just don’t understand how U.S. Soccer could even think about paying them any less.
I’m hoping that this can all be resolved in the next few weeks. Not only will these women get the pay they deserve, but the case will also serve as a model, proving that women can (and will) fight for their rights, and the world will side with them.
