Have you heard of this Christmas legend? This… spooky Christmas legend. Hold on to your knees! They might start a knockin’! What is this Christmas, or frickin Halloween!?! In any case, the legend of Gryla and her Yule Lads, the terrifying Christmas witch, was featured in Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: A Midwinter’s Tale.

But what is this spooky legend?

Grýla loosely translates to “growler”. Gyrla comes into town with a bag into which she would toss naughty children, kind of like a not overdone Krampus.

Gryla has 13 sons called the “Yule Lads”, and each of them are troublemakers that take turns visiting children on the 13 nights leading up to Christmas.

So if you were naughty this year, then look out for the witch and her 13 children, one of which is named Door Sniffer, and another one who is named Sausage Swiper. Guard your sausages if you’ve sinned this year. The Sausage Swiper shall come and kidnap your various meats!

And candle beggar? You stay the hell away from me. You won’t be stealing my fantastic candles! As for bowl sniffer? My under the bed bowls ain’t going anywhere. Good luck, folks. Those bowls are mine and I have been good enough to continue to keep them there. Thank you Yule Boys.
