A woman at a supermarket has become an Internet hero for defending two Spanish-speaking women under a verbal attack from another customer.
This took place at a City Market in the town of Rifle, Colorado. Fabiola Velasquez and her friend Isabel were speaking Spanish to each other when Linda Dwire confronted them and asked if they lived in America.
She began filming the incident when Kamira Trent walked in to defend them.
People online are applauding Kamira, not just for defending the women, but also following Dwire until she left the store and calling the police. Kamira said she first intervened when she heard Dwire say: “You’re in America. You’re in my country. You can’t speak Spanish here. You need to speak English if you’re going to be in America.”
She says she’s received mostly positive messages, other than the “regular trollage.” On Facebook, Fabiola said she had seen videos like this before, which gave her the courage to post her own. But during the confrontation she said she felt a great feeling of helplessness.”
Linda Dwire was arrested and charged with harassment and, as is typical in these cases, she has defended her actions and claims she’s not a racist.
The hole-digging commences in an interview with Buzzfeed, where Dwire said “It has nothing to do with race. It’s a patriotic thing. When people come to my country, they need to love it enough to speak English. They’d rather have their country here. I don’t mind them coming here as long as they want to be an American and not go on our welfare system. When there are so many people that they don’t learn English, that’s what divides our country.”
You know, we’ve covered a lot of these types of videos, and it’s always a language spoken predominantly by non-white people that gets these supposedly non-racist people so upset. You never see someone lose their mind because two people are speaking French in public.
Fabiola has lived in the U.S. for eight years and said it was good to have someone at the market stick up for her.
By the way, we’re not saying that White Saviors are the greatest and everyone needs a white person to stick up for them, but it’s important to highlight when people are using their privilege for good.
Commenters nationwide are thanking Kamira for standing up for Fabiola and Isabel, many of them calling her a Shero and a Queen. Would you guys be brave enough to stand up for people being harassed in public? Let us know in the comments or on Twitter at @WhatsTrending.
