This guy was at an HDTV Outlet in Anaheim, California when his vape pen exploded out of nowhere. You can see from the surveillance video that he’s not doing anything special. Legitimately just standing there when his pants catch on fire.
According to the store manager, he was preparing a receipt for the customer when the explosion happened. Yeah. “The whole fire thing” has a tendency to cause major burns.
The customer, Mohamad Abdihdy, treated the painful burns himself at home instead of going to a hospital, but he did say the pain has largely kept him from walking since the explosion. He told NBC Los Angeles, “I’m going back to hookah.”
And that’s the first time this has happened and there’s nothing more to do this video… Just kidding – vape pens explode all the time!
Jason Curmi’s vape pen exploded in his pocket, ripping a hole through his jeans, and leaving him with a severe leg burn. He said he had no idea the battery could explode or that the makers advise people to not carry them in pockets.
And on May 5, Tallmadge D’Elia from Florida became the first confirmed death from an exploding vape pen. According to an autopsy, the “explosion sent two pieces of the vape pen into D’Elia’s skull.” He also suffered burns over 80 percent of his body.
But the e-cigarette that killed D’Elia is known as a “mechanical mod” that doesn’t have the built-in safety features of most vape pens on the market.

According to the president of the American Vaping Association: “Millions of adults use vapor products regularly and tragic events like this are rare. The vast majority of vaping devices on the market carry the same fire risk as other products that use lithium-ion batteries, such as cellphones and laptops.”
Nevertheless, the US Fire Administration identified 195 separate vape pen explosion incidents between 2009 and 2016, and they consider e-cigarettes and “new and unique hazard” to consumers, since the lithium-ion batteries are in such close proximity to human faces and genitals.
All that being said, research suggests vaping is still far safer than smoking conventional cigarettes, because those who vape aren’t inhaling the bounty of harmful chemicals found in tobacco products. Makes sense. About 15-20% of smokers develop lung cancer. Only about 1 in 150,000 people will have their vape pen explode. Pretty good odds.
For not having such problems with your vapes, you should choose only the best vape and stay safe.
