#ComingOutForEquality: A Worthy Cause for National Coming Out Day
Today is National Coming Out Day, when LGBT people are encouraged to publicly declare their sexual orientation to friends and family, if they can – because the more visible the LGBT community is, the easier it is for people still in the closet to embrace their identity and find acceptance.
Unfortunately, the act of coming out can still get you fired or evicted in most of the country.
Actor/producer Kit Williamson, creator and star of the award-winning web series “EastSiders,” has launched a campaign to draw attention to this problem, encouraging people to tell their coming out stories online and support the Equality Act. Championed by the Human Rights Campaign, the Equality Act would establish protections against discrimination in employment, housing, access to government and other important areas.
“It’s been a really really long journey towards self-acceptance and self-love, and now I’m so lucky because I’m living a life I didn’t even envision for myself,” Williamson says in his own coming out story. “I didn’t even think it would be possible, growing up gay in Jackson, Mississippi, to fall in love, meet the man of my dreams [John Halbach] who I produce this show with, and get engaged to him.”
Williamson is urging people to post their stories – either their own experience coming out, or a time when a loved one came out to them – across social media with the hashtag #ComingOutForEquality. “I think it’s really important that we share our stories, because in 27 states you can still be fired for being gay. That’s why I’m coming out for the Equality Act, to end discrimination against LGBT people.”
His newly-launched non-profit, The New Hollywood LGBT, is also inviting people to pledge their support for the Equality Act on their website, www.thenewhollywoodLGBT.org.
