VSauce3’s Jake Roper Tells Fans He Has Cancer
VSauce3 host Jake Roper had some sad news for his fans and supporters the day before Thanksgiving.
“I think this goes without saying, but you are obviously a very important part of my life,” he said. “So I think it’s only fair to talk to you about this or tell you this, which is yesterday I found out that I have cancer. So there’s that bit of information.”
He explained that he had been diagnosed with sarcoma, a rare form of cancer that took the form of a tumor in his leg. He’d noticed it about five months ago and had it removed, and doctors thought it was benign at first – but on Tuesday they called him to say they’d done tests on the tumor and discovered it was cancerous.
Meet Telula the Tumor. We had grown so close the past few months but it was time for us to go our separate ways. Farewell, Telula!
Starting next week, Roper will be getting an MRI to see if the cancer had spread to any other parts of his body, and will be getting surgery for his leg and eventually radiation treatment. Meanwhile, he said in the comments of the video that he would be stepping away from the internet for a while.
He told his fans that the best way to support him was to continue to watch his work on VSauce3. “If I live for 50 years or if I live for one more year, those videos will always exist. Those are a part of me – those are me. Those are who I am, so at least I have those little bits of me that are always there. So that’s really what you can do – just watch the things I make, and hopefully get something out of them.”
Roper has been the host of VSauce3, a channel that covers the real-world science of fictional worlds and video games, since 2011. The latest video asks whether you could survive a nuclear holocaust like the one depicted in “Fallout 4.”
