Those Numbers On Your Toaster Dials Are Totally Meaningless

When I make toast, I set the dial to a 3, because I like my toast crisp and brown, but with no charred edges or burned bits. It also seems to take about three minutes, so I naturally believed that the numbers on the toaster dial corresponded to the number of minutes I was waiting for toast.

    How wrong I was.

Genius timewaster Tom Scott set out to prove that these numbers are completely arbitrary and don’t correspond to minutes. This makes sense, since most pop-up toasters, especially older models, don’t have timing chips. Rather, they run off bi-metallic strips that bend when they heat up. Newer toasters, however, might just be more time-oriented than Scott expected.
