John Oliver Goes Off About March Madness
March Madness starts tomorrow! Are you excited? The NCAA certainly is. They’re about to make an absurd amount of money — $1 Billion in television ad revenue alone. With all that cash, surely some of it will go to the hard-working athletes who are actually playing the game, right? Surely the NCAA isn’t a corrupt and unaccountable system steadfastly refusing to compensate the very people who make this tournament possible, right?
Turns out they totally are!
John Oliver breaks it down in the latest “Last Week Tonight.” He makes a lot of excellent points in the twenty minute dissection of the ridiculous “student-athlete” argument the NCAA has used for decades to avoid compensating athletes. Or, to put it simply, “The NCAA doesn’t pay athletes because they consider them amateurs. The NCAA considers them amateurs because they don’t get paid.”
