HBO’s Game of Thrones kicked off its fifth season this weekend. The sprawling fantasy world created by George R.R. Martin has taken viewers and readers across a world-spanning saga of murder, dragons, and intrigue. But not until this weekend were viewers invited to explore the eighth kingdom of Westeros. Welcome to South Centros.
Starring Ice Cube (Kenan Thompson), this Game of Thrones is directed by John Singletary, who created 1991’s classic Boyz n The Hood. South Centros, much like the South Central L.A. depicted in Singetary’s movie, is a rough part of town where death lurks around every corner. (Not unlike the rest of the Game of Thrones world, actually.) At one point Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who plays Jamie Lannister on the actual Game of Thrones, shows up for some drive-by showboating.
It’s a convoluted story, just like the real Game of Thrones. As one character says, “It’s a long story. Some say too long. If it was a book, it’d be seven long-ass books.”
