Janet Mock Flips The Script On Interviews With Transwomen
Activist Janet Mock Asks The Questions She Gets Asked
At the end of the interview, Menendez tears up calling the questions invasive. “I felt like a token,” she said.
This is what Mock, an author and trans activist, goes through every time she’s interviewed. “I have to give out all this private information about my body, my journey and my life,” she said. “Some of the questions aren’t necessary.”
Menendez said having the questions turned on her made her realize how intimate the questions feel and have nothing to do with identity.
Mock said the questions have her prove that her identity is “authentic” and “real” and it’s exhausting. Menendez thanks her for flipping the interview and showing her how wrong those questions are.
