Inspiring Apple Employee Helps Special Needs Kid
A difficult situation for the mother of a special needs boy became an inspiring story that’s taking off on Facebook.
Writer and actress LynnMarie Rink has a nine-year-old son, James, who has Down Syndrom and autism. She found that he can use an iPad to help him communicate with people, but after a while their old tablet wore down needed to be replaced.
The Fiona Rose Murphey Foundation arranged for them to get a new iPad from the local Apple Store, but while LynnMarie and her son were at the store, he took off running and accidentally slammed head-first into a glass wall.
He wasn’t badly hurt, but LynnMarie was upset and embarrassed and dreaded going up to the counter to collect the iPad with everyone watching. But then an employee named Andrew Wall came over and sat with them, and went out of his way to bring the iPad to them and show James how to use it.
Later, LynnMarie wrote an open letter on Facebook:
There are no words to accurately describe how grateful I am that he took the time to ‘meet us right where we were.’ He didn’t have to sit down on the floor with us. He could have easily waited for us to stand. Could have easily waited for us to come back another day. But he hung out with us in the midst of our pain.
Andrew has since written a response to Lynn.
“Hey Lynn, I want to say thank you so much for those kind words! I began working at Apple in hopes of having fulfilling moments like this. Post Apple my hopes are to work within the realm of youth counseling. Thanks again for making my day!”
