Meet Therese Patricia Okoumou. Like many, Therese finds the actions that the Donald Trump administration takes towards immigrants, such as separating children from their parents repulsive. However, unlike so many of us, she chose to show her disgust about it in an incredible act of protest — by sitting at the base of the Statue of Liberty and refusing to leave her spot.

On July 4th, Theresa climbed up to the base of the Statue of Liberty to protest the Trump Administration’s immigration policies and treatment of those seeking asylum. Okoumou is a member of the group Rise and Resist which also staged a protest at the Statue on July 4th.

The protestor declared that she would not come down until “all the children are released”. After three hours, she was approached by police and apprehended.

Although Okoumo’s climb was not a part of the planned protest, Rise and Resist says they are committed to paying for Okoumou’s legal fees. Liberty Island was evacuated during this process, and hopefully Okoumo’s rebellious act brought attention to the children who were in custody.
