A man whose hero wife died on 9/11 lashes out at transgender icon Caitlyn Jenner over Glamour Magazine’s Woman of the Year award. It’s like a perfect storm of political outrage.

In 2001, Glamour Magazine posthumously awarded policewoman Moira Smith with their Woman of the Year award. Moira died in the World Trade Center on 9/11 after bravely evacuating several other people. Her husband James Smith accepted the award for her.

This year, Glamour Magazine gave the award to Caitlyn Jenner – and James Smith promptly returned his wife’s award in protest.

“I find it insulting to Moira Smith’s memory, and the memory of other heroic women who have earned this award,” he wrote in an open letter. “Was there no woman in America, or the rest of the world, more deserving than this man?”

Nothing like some self-righteous transphobia to cheer up your day – but what are you going to do, criticize the grieving widower of a 9/11 hero, you monster?

It’s worth nothing that Glamour honors women from all kinds of backgrounds each year, and at least one of them is an entertainer. Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez and Victoria Beckham have all received awards.

Other honorees this year include Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards, ballerina Misty Copeland, and a group of advocates from Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.
