Swizz Beatz and Timbaland Strike Verzuz Distribution Partnership with Elon Musk’s X

Verzuz, the online music platform pioneered by Swizz Beatz and Timbaland during the pandemic, has entered into a strategic distribution partnership with Elon Musk’s X, as announced at the Cannes Lions conference in France on Wednesday. Earlier this year, Swizz Beatz and Timbaland regained full ownership of Verzuz from their previous partner, Triller, and now hold 100% ownership of the platform. They also retained equity in Triller along with the artists who participated in Verzuz, as detailed in the announcement. Under the terms of the new agreement, Swizz Beatz and Timbaland maintain complete creative control while X gains exclusive distribution rights. The partnership aims to expand Verzuz’s audience significantly, projecting access to over 550 million active users through X’s platform, thereby enhancing its viewership and global reach. Viewers will now have the opportunity to watch Verzuz exclusively for free on X.

Verzuz launched in 2020 as a means of connecting music enthusiasts through virtual rap battles and DJ showdowns amidst the pandemic. Originating with matchups between Swizz Beatz and Timbaland themselves, the platform quickly gained traction with pairings such as Babyface vs. Teddy Riley, Nelly vs. Ludacris, and other notable collaborations. Noteworthy matchups included T-Pain vs. Lil Jon, RZA vs. DJ Premiere, Erykah Badu vs. Jill Scott, Alicia Keys vs. John Legend, DMX vs. Snoop Dogg, and Patti Labelle vs. Gladys Knight, among others. Since its inception, Verzuz has produced over 40 episodes, accumulating more than 100 million live views and generating over 70 billion impressions, underscoring its cultural impact and popularity.

Following its acquisition by Triller in 2021, Verzuz encountered legal challenges and was subsequently repurchased by Swizz Beatz and Timbaland. The announcement confirms that the next Verzuz event will be scheduled soon, reflecting the platform’s ongoing commitment to delivering unique music experiences to its global audience.
