  • Willie Nelson doesn’t have to prove himself to anybody — as one of country music’s most legendary singer/songwriters, he hardly needs to make goodwill gestures anymore. But that’s exactly what he did. Nelson recently recorded a song written by a woman, Lyndel Rhodes, some years ago. Rhodes, now 92, got the pleasure of listening to Nelson’s recording of her song first. This is just another piece of evidence that shows that once you’re country, you’re Forever Country.

According to Wide Open Country, Nelson was shown the song, “Little House on the Hill,” by Rhodes’s son Buddy Cannon, who’s one of country music’s most respected songwriters and producers. Cannon has previously worked with Nelson, as well as with Dolly Parton and Randy Travis.

Here’s the original video of Rhodes hearing Nelson’s cover of the song for the first time:

  • Rhodes beams with pride as she listens to Nelson sing her song. While she can’t sing much herself nowadays, Rhodes is still able to foot tap and listen. When asked who’s song it is, she says “mine”. When her son asks if she wrote it, she replies “I tried to”.
