  • The Guild” creator/star/writer/media maven Felicia Day brings her YouTube star power to What’s Trending in a Shay Carl-moderated discussion about the new season of her iconic web series, running her own Geek and Sundry YouTube network, and the exciting future for cult favorite, “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog.”

Since “The Guild” launched its highly-anticipated sixth season last week, famed video gamer Ms. Day now has a bit more time to devote to her favorite hobby, but that’s not to say she isn’t busy taking new media by storm. She still has her own online business to manage and a web-to-tv show to promote.

That’s right, Evil League of Evil-ers! Joss Whedon’s brainchild, “Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog” is making its television debut tonight at 9 pm PST on the CW, bringing the cult-famous Internet musical to an even broader audience. Felicia will be live-tweeting the West Coast show along with co-stars Neil Patrick Harris and Nathan Fillion. (Let’s get #DrHorrible trending!)

Back in the writing wold, Felicia admits that it actually gets harder to pen “The Guild” with each coming season. “You’re always looking for ways to reinvent the show,” she says, with a great deal of that motivation coming from the engaged online audience. As the oft-credited pioneer of successful web series, Felicia says, “I feel like I definitely have to deliver.”

Following up from a fan question, Felicia analyzes one of her greatest writing challenges: balancing the need to express herself with the desire to cater to audience expectations. She reveals that certain actions of “The Guild” character, Floyd, were inspired by the passion and struggle of her process creating Geek and Sundry.

“As all of us know, we make web video and we make it for people to like it, and when people don’t like it, it’s so devastating,” she says. “But to let that kind of minority voice hamper your ability to create what you truly want to create…it’s a tricky balancing act.”

When pegged with a question about a “Dr. Horrible” sequel, Felicia beams, “I hear a lot about that.” And while she cheekily avoids confirming or denying her involvement in the next sequence, she’s adamant about her support for the project as a whole.

“I think that ‘Dr. Horrible’ still is a benchmark that all of us aspire to in web video,” she says. “I think it set a level that we sort of tried to meet and then it kind of lulled again in web video. And now we’re kind of entering that point where I think the potential of ‘Dr. Horrible’ is really going to be seen in the next year or so.”
