Jimmy Carter, the longest-living U.S. president, recently fulfilled a heartfelt wish as he approaches 20 months in hospice care. The former president, who celebrated his 100th birthday on October 1, expressed a desire to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris before he passes away. His grandson, Jason Carter, shared this sentiment, stating, “I’m only trying to make it to vote for Kamala Harris.”

On October 16, Carter’s wish became a reality when he filled out an absentee ballot for Harris. The ballot was then placed in a dropbox at the Sumter County Courthouse in Plains, Georgia, his hometown. This moment was confirmed by both Jason and Chip Carter, another of his grandsons, to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Chip, 74, remarked on his father’s mood during the voting process. “I think he feels good,” he said. “It was a good morning for him and good for us that he got it done.” Jimmy Carter has been in hospice care since February 2023, making this voting occasion particularly meaningful for the family.

The absentee ballot was submitted by Chip’s wife, Becky, on behalf of the former president. When asked if his father had voted for Harris, Chip responded affirmatively, noting, “Absolutely. He’s never voted for a Republican in his life.”

Carter’s support for Harris aligns with his longstanding Democratic values. At the Democratic National Convention in August, Jason Carter spoke about his grandfather’s endorsement of Harris, stating, “Kamala Harris carries my grandfather’s legacy. She knows what is right, and she fights for it.” He emphasized that leadership is about service rather than selfishness, and that effective leaders can achieve much with kindness and a smile.

While Jimmy Carter participated in what could be his final election, his 18-year-old grandson, Henry, is gearing up for his first voting experience. “I am excited about this year’s election because it will be my first time able to vote,” Henry told PEOPLE. “And that means a lot.” This generational moment underscores the importance of civic engagement within the Carter family.

As Georgia emerges as a crucial swing state in the upcoming 2024 presidential election, the state carries 16 electoral votes. Polling indicates a competitive race, with Harris and former President Donald Trump vying for support. The outcome in Georgia could be pivotal in determining the next president.
