Chaz May, a rising star in the world of online comedy, has shared insights into his journey and experiences with producing comedy videos. Known for his unique characters and engaging sketches, May’s path to success has been anything but conventional.
In an exclusive interview with What’s Trending, May described the evolution of his comedic career, highlighting the challenges and triumphs of creating content in the digital age. “It’s been crazy!” May exclaimed. “I started doing improv and sketch in New York City, but going online really opened up more opportunities to play around with different characters and formats.” He continued, “Some things work, and some definitely don’t, but that’s part of the process.”

The COVID-19 pandemic, which forced many performers to adapt to new formats, was a pivotal moment for May. He reflected on this period: “When the world went into lockdown, I was doing improv shows on Zoom—which, trust me, was just as awkward as it sounds.” Missing the live performance experience, May sought alternative ways to continue his comedic work. “I really missed performing live, so I started looking for other ways to keep making comedy. That’s when I started posting character videos on social media, and I just never stopped!”
May has had a large number of videos resonate with audiences online with millions of views on some of his popular TikTok content.
Standing out in a crowded field of online comedy can be challenging, but May has found his own approach to differentiate himself. “For me, I try to be authentic and follow what makes me laugh,” he said. “I never knew—and honestly, I still don’t know—what my ‘thing’ is. I just try to create characters and sketches that I genuinely find funny, even if they’re a bit weird or niche.” According to May, authenticity is key. “I think people can tell when something’s genuine—if it makes me laugh and I feel excited about it, that’s what helps you stand out in such a crowded space.”

May also offered advice for aspiring comedians looking to break into the industry. “Just start!” he urged. “I was doing comedy for a long time before anyone cared!” He emphasized that waiting for the perfect idea or the best equipment can be counterproductive. “Don’t wait around for the perfect idea or the best equipment—just start making stuff and put it out there. Not everyone’s going to get your humor, and that’s okay. Find your audience and keep going. And most importantly, have fun!” May’s enthusiasm for the craft is evident in his approach. “Comedy’s all about playing, so if you’re not having fun, what’s the point?”

Reflecting on his career, May highlighted a key lesson he has learned. “Be nice, work hard, and say thank you!” he stated. This straightforward advice underscores the importance of professionalism and gratitude in any field, particularly in the competitive world of comedy.
Looking to the future, May is both curious and optimistic about the evolution of comedy online. “I have no idea and that is what’s so exciting!” he said. Despite the current dominance of short-form content, May hopes to see a resurgence of longer, narrative-driven comedy. “I think we’re all hooked on punchy short-form content, but I think we’ll see a resurgence of more long-form, narrative-driven comedy. At least I hope so!”
