Roulette is a staple in any casino, and it’s rare that you’ll find one without multiple gaming tables. The game of chance has spun into the hearts of many casino-goers for centuries.  But so much has changed since the Ancient Greeks and Romans would spin their weapons and chariot wheels just to bet on the outcome.  Read on to find out more.

A brief history

The initial form of the Roulette wheel was devised back in the 17th century, when French mathematician and inventor Blaise Pascal attempted to defy physics and create a perpetual motion machine. Whilst his invention failed, it did lay the foundations for the modern-day Roulette wheel that we know and love today.

In 1843, French brothers Francois and Louis Blanc arguably revolutionised the Roulette wheel. The brothers moved to Hamburg, Germany; and then removed the double zero pocket from the Roulette wheel, lowering the house edge and creating the single zero version, which would later become known as European Roulette. This version of the game quickly rose in popularity, with higher winning chances and a unique spin on gameplay – the brothers had successfully boosted Hamburg’s economy.

When French colonists sailed the single-zero wheel over-seas to American shores, the new variation didn’t become quite as popular, with both casinos and players preferring the riskier, higher house edge that came with the double-zero pocket, which later became known as American Roulette.

Live Roulette

Fast forward to 1996, and the first online casinos were opening their virtual doors. As technology evolved over the years, so did online gaming, with internet speeds and greater bandwidth paving the way for live casino gaming – an idea that had been floating around since the mid-2000s.

In the modern-day, you can play live Roulette, alongside many other classic games, with themed variations and unique adventures, hosted by a real-life human dealer in real time, streamed from a specialist studio straight to your device!

So, with a live dealer spinning a real Roulette wheel right in front of your eyes, it’s clear that the classic game has stood the test of time. But the question remains: how has live Roulette changed the way we play the classic game?

With the ability to play both European and American Roulette, as well as other variations and themed games, right at your fingertips, the days of getting dressed and finding a local casino that hosts the version of the game you wish to play are long gone. You can place your bets and watch the wheel spin in real-time, anywhere and at anytime you fancy.

The game is so accessible, that the future of casino gaming has truly been changed, and unless you particularly want a day out, or to visit a land-based casino because of its artwork and history, everything else you could possibly want in a game of Roulette – and more – is available online.

The way we play the classic game is unlikely to ever go back to how it was. As technology continues to advance, Roulette has already proven it can keep up, with some live casino games already being made available to enjoy in Virtual Reality (VR), the way we play Roulette could be about to change forever, once again.
