Pop singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes once participated in the popular Vanity Fair lie detector test style interview. Several years ago, the publication asked Mendes for his thoughts on actor Joe Alwyn, who was in a relationship with acclaimed singer-songwriter Taylor Swift at the time. The question was born from Mendes’ friendship with Swift, born from his spot as an opener on her “1989” tour in 2015.

Mendes appeared skeptical, and even jokingly said that Alwyn looked like a “villain.” The clip is now circulating across social media again following Swift’s longtime Grammy winning producer Jack Antonoff sharing that the songstress penned the heartbreaking “Midnights” track “You’re Losing Me” in December 2021, months prior to her breakup with Alwyn being made public. The track details the singer entreating her partner to fight for her in the relationship, and when he does not, he loses her.

Swift and Alwyn were reportedly in a relationship for about six years, with the breakup becoming public knowledge in April 2023. With the release of an extended version of “Midnights (3 a.m. version)” came a newfound analysis of the timeline of the breakup. Bonus tracks “You’re Losing Me” and “Hits Different” make the album appear to thematically focus primarily on a breakup.

Swift has previously explained that the album was written on 13 of the most sleepless nights of her life, placing each track at different times in her life. While a number of songs (including “You’re On Your Own Kid”) allude more to her experiences in the music industry rather than solely her romantic life, fans have widely coined the body of work as a breakup album, with many feeling that Mendes’ comments could have secretly predicted some of Alwyn’s allegedly toxic behaviors.

“Midnights”, Mayhem, And Matty Healy

The theory that Swift and Alwyn broke up significantly earlier than the public was made aware has been circulating since Swift’s alleged relationship with the controversial frontman of the 1975, Matty Healy. Critics expressed that they felt it was quick for Swift to move on after the end of a long term relationship. However, Swift had performed with the 1975 at their concert in January, leading some to believe that Swift and Alwyn could have broken up upon the fall 2022 release of “Midnights” and that she could have simply reconnected with Healy months later.

Throughout Swift’s brief alleged relationship with Matty Healy, more of his negative comments and actions emerged. In particular, his offensive remarks surrounding rapper Ice Spice on “The Adam Friedland Show” appeared shortly before their rumored split. As a result, Swift forged a newfound friendship with Spice herself, even collaborating with her on  “Karma” remix.

Now, some months later, Swift is now dating NFL Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. The pair first united when a few months ago, his home stadium of Arrowhead was converted to a concert venue in the city for Swift’s tour, and the singer left a lasting impression on the NFL tight end. The Kelce brothers recounted Travis becoming enchanted with Swift, and getting creative with trying to get her attention. The NFL star admitted that he attempted to hand Swift a friendship bracelet with his phone number on it.

The exact date of the end of Swift’s relationship with Alwyn remains in the lavender haze of the past, but in the meantime, karma just might be in her favor, since the guy on the Chiefs is coming straight home to her in the time since her last alleged breakup.
