Rapper Ice Spice confirmed in a new interview with Variety that the 1975 frontman Matty Healy apologized to her privately several times.

Healy previously made what some felt was a racist remark about rapper Ice Spice on “The Adam Frieland Show” in February. The singer referred to Spice as a “chubby Chinese woman” and insulted her musical abilities. Spice revealed that she was “confused” by his insults and how they even came about, given that she has only ever spoken about the 1975 in a positive light.

She went on to explain that outside of Healy’s onstage apology, he has privately apologized to her multiple times.

Spice recalled, “First of all, I’m thick. What do you mean Chinese? What? But then they apologized or whatever. And the whole time, I didn’t really care. But that’s funny because I saw him at the Jean Paul Gaultier party a couple days ago, and he was like, ‘Hey, you OK?’ and I’m like, ‘Of course.’ He apologized to me a bunch of times. We’re good.”

In April, Healy took to the stage and offered a live apology to the young rapper. The singer stated that he “loves Ice Spice.” He went on to say that he tends to take things “too far sometimes” and that he feels “a bit embarrassed.” The rock singer explained his fear of sincerity on such a massive platform, saying that he “never meant to hurt anybody.”

On the same podcast, the 1975 frontman and podcast host Adam Frieland mocked several indigenous accents, and made a comment about queer baiting and Harry Styles that rubbed listeners the wrong way. Styles has repeatedly not labeled his sexuality, but his public relationships with women are what sparked the comment.

On a previous iteration of the show called “Cumtown”, Healy once alleged that he consumed adult content published to a site called Ghetto Gaggers, in which he stated that Black women were “brutalized.” The clip resurfaced amid Healy’s rumored previous relationship with acclaimed singer-songwriter Taylor Swift.

More recently, in July, the band was banned from Malaysia after Healy kissed bassist Ross MacDonald onstage. The nation has several anti-LGBTQ+ laws, and Healy and MacDonald sought to protest them. The indie rock band performed at Good Vibes festival in Malaysia’s capital of Kuala Lumpur, when the kiss cut the set short. Healy then told the crowd, “I made a mistake when we were booking shows, I wasn’t looking into it. I don’t see the f—ing point, right? I do not see the point of inviting The 1975 to a country and telling us who we can have sex with. Some local fans felt this was an act of white saviorism.

The 1975 frontman went on to say, “And I’m sorry if that offends you and you’re religious, but your government are a bunch of f—ing… and I don’t care anymore. If you push I’m gonna push back. I’m not in the f—ing mood. I’m not in the f—ing mood anymore.” The clip from the show reached viral heights, resulting in the band’s ban from the nation. In Malaysia, homosexuality is punishable by imprisonment.

Social Media Reactions

While many are glad that the singer apologized to Ice Spice, critics of Healy continue to remind the internet that the singer has a repeat history of constantly saying offensive things, particularly towards racial and ethnic minorities and women. He most recently made an insensitive joke about indie rock supergroup Boygenius, claiming that the group’s name inspired him to start “Girlr*tard” in response. Lucy Dacus, a member of Boygenius, was quick to call him out on his offensive joke.

Healy most recently announced that the band would be going on “an indefinite hiatus” following their current “At Their Very Best” tour.
