  • When I was 13-years-old, I was going into my freshman year of high school with the hopes of making the cheer team. The auditions or “try-outs” were scary and I was just performing in front of a few coaches. Evie Clair, a 13-year-old from Arizona auditioned for America’s Got Talent and blew the crowd and judges away with her raw talent. What would be extremely nerve-wracking for many people, was a moment for Clair to shine -- especially for her dad who is battling stage 4 colon cancer.

“I’m gonna sing Arms by Christina Perri,” she said through tears. “When my dad is having rough days, then I go up to his room and I sing him this song to help him feel better and just to give him comfort and strength to continue fighting.”

Before she started singing, Simon Cowell told her to take a minute to breath and Tyra Banks brought water on stage to her to help her calm down. Cowell then told the girl “Now, this is the time I wanna hear the best vocal you’ve ever, ever done, got it?” She didn’t disappoint.

Clair’s voice was powerful, smooth and moving. Her courage to come out and tell this story then to perform in the way she did brought tears to many eyes, left me with chills and brought the audience and judges to their feet.
