Should Weird Al Rock Super Bowl XLIX?

How could Weird Al possibly top a summer that found him dominating the YouTube charts for 8 straight days, PLUS scoring his career-first #1 album? Maybe by rocking out at the 49th annual Super Bowl halftime show, being hosted in February 2015 at Arizona’s University of Phoenix stadium?

That’s what Seattle resident Ed Ball is pulling for. His new Change.org petition, nominating Weird Al for the halftime duties fulfilled last year by Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, has scored nearly 20,000 supporters to date.

Here’s how Ed makes his case: “But you cannot deny that he has crafted his art and been successful over the past 4 decades, gaining the respect and approval of every artist he parodies. I have loved him since I was a child, and I know he puts on a helluva live show.” He also suggests that some of the huge pop artists parodied on Al’s new album, “Mandatory Fun,” could theoretically join him on stage, boosting the halftime show’s star power considerably. (Pharrell Williams and Iggy Azalea cameos, anyone?)

There’s no response yet from Al, and of course, Change.org petitions are not (yet!) legally binding, so even if tens of thousands more signatures come in, there’s no guarantee that Ed will get his way. (In the end, it’s probably up to NBC and whatever corporate sponsor they line up.)
