"Learning Town" Series First Look With Felicia Day and Paul & Storm at YouTube Space L.A.

  • Live from the opening night gala of YouTube's Creator Space L.A., Internet stars Felicia Day and Paul & Storm stopped by our live show to share an exclusive sneak preview of their brand new Geek & Sundry series, "Learning Town," a parody children's show peppered with puppets (confirmed as not pornographic), humor, adult situations, and all kinds of musical stylings.

"It's kind of like 'Flight of the Conchords' meets drug-addled vaudeville," Felicia says of the new series, which launches January 15, 2013. "With some '30 Rock' thrown in there!" Paul adds.

It turns out that the videomaking trio formed after some stalker-y overtures from Paul & Storm when they were a touring band. "We started out as fans of Felicia, actually," Paul says. "We set a challenge that we wanted Felicia Day to acknowledge our existence" by a certain date. Finally, she tweeted at them, saw some of their work, and fell in love with their humor.

Now that she's running her own YouTube network, Felicia is able to give the guys a space to let their wacky ideas fly. For the past few weeks, Paul & Storm have been breaking in YouTube's new Creator Space, as their series marks the first longform production to be shot in the Playa Vista facility.

Our guests go on to gush about the Space's amenities, which include three green screen stages, a plethora of post-production resources, fiber-optic technology to broadcast live feeds to and from around the world, and also a fire pole! (Perfect for puppet shenanigans.)

Felicia points out that L.A.-based creators are immersed in a world where people are spending millions of dollars on every hour of entertainment, but that kind of scale doesn't quite jive with online content. "Whereas before, when we'd be struggling to make our budget work to have one place to shoot, we now are able to [...] have really first class equipment and space to be able to make anything we want," she says. "Really, the sky's the limit."
