Instagram is rolling out a new feature that will notify parents when their teenager repeatedly searches for terms related to suicide or self-harm — a significant escalation in Meta’s efforts to position itself as a responsible platform for young users amid mounting regulatory and public pressure.
Starting next week, parents enrolled in Instagram’s parental supervision tools in the U.S., U.K., Australia, and Canada will receive an alert via email, text, or WhatsApp if their teen makes multiple searches for phrases associated with suicide or self-harm within a short period of time.
The rollout will expand to other regions later this year.
The alerts come with expert resources to help parents navigate what can be a difficult conversation. Instagram already blocks these searches outright, redirecting users to crisis helplines rather than returning any results.
The new feature simply ensures parents are looped in when a teen is repeatedly trying to find this type of content.

“When a young person searches about suicide or self-harm, empowering a parent to step in can be extremely important,” said Dr. Sameer Hinduja, co-director of the Cyberbullying Research Center. “The fact that Meta has now built this in is a meaningful step forward and is the kind of change that child safety experts have been pushing for.”
Meta said it worked with its Suicide and Self-Harm Advisory Group to calibrate the alert threshold carefully — requiring several searches within a short window to reduce false alarms, while still erring on the side of caution.
Looking ahead, Meta says it’s also building similar parental alert systems for teen interactions with its AI tools, targeting conversations where teens attempt to engage in discussions related to suicide or self-harm. More details are expected later this year.
The announcement doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Instagram and Meta have faced years of pressure. From lawmakers, parents, and health experts over the toll social media takes on young people’s mental health.
The data is stark. Children and adolescents who spend more than three hours a day on social media face double the risk of mental health problems, including symptoms of depression and anxiety. Up to 95% of young people aged 13-17 report using a social media platform, with nearly two-thirds saying they use it every day.
Meta’s own internal research hasn’t helped its case. According to an internal Meta study, 32% of teen girls said that when they felt bad about their bodies, Instagram made them feel worse.

Legislators have been pushing back hard. The Kids Off Social Media Act, introduced in the 119th Congress, would prohibit children under 13 from creating social media accounts and ban algorithmic content recommendations for users under 17.
At the state level, Virginia’s new law limits social media users under 16 to just one hour per day on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat unless a parent gives verifiable consent for more screen time. New York, meanwhile, now requires social media platforms to display warning labels about the dangerous impact certain features can have on young users’ mental health.
Minnesota is following suit — Gov. Tim Walz signed a law requiring mental health warning labels on social media platforms, set to take effect in July 2026.
The regulatory pressure has clearly influenced platforms to move faster on safety features. Whether alerts like Instagram’s are enough, or simply a way to stay ahead of legislation, remains a central debate.
