12 Facts You Learned In School That Are No Longer True

Teacher explaining updated science facts about Pluto, food pyramid, and tongue map to elementary students in classroom.

Summary:

  • Pluto lost its planet status in 2006, America wasn’t discovered by Columbus, and seasons aren’t caused by sun’s distance.

  • Traditional teachings like food pyramid, tongue map, and goldfish memory are debunked with scientific evidence.

  • Neanderthals were smart, Great Wall can’t be seen from space, and there are five, not four, oceans.

Is it possible to remember how, in a classroom, you absorb the facts as a sponge? It turns out that you were not always right about your teachers. Science develops, history is being revised, and yesterday’s gospel is being transformed into a myth of tomorrow. Things that millions of Americans were taught in school that just aren’t true anymore include the planetary status of Pluto, the discovery of America by Columbus, and many more.

Pluto’s Not A Planet

In 2006, the International Astronomical Union officially withdrew the planet status of Pluto and gave it a dwarf planet status. The students of America made generations reciting nine planets simply to know nothing. Poor Pluto had not really seen it coming.

Columbus Was Wrong

Accepting Columbus as the discoverer of America is summer nonsense. The Native Americans are the residents of this land who had been living there for thousands of years before his arrival. Historians also attest that Columbus was already aware of the round nature of the earth even before he had taken his ship across the Atlantic.

Seasons Aren’t Distance

In most schools, it was taught that the seasons on Earth are caused by the distance of the sun. NASA puts it all right by stating that this is absolutely not the case. In fact, seasons are all brought about by the axial tilt of the Earth due to the annual rotation around the sun.

Food Pyramid Failed

U.S. Food Guide Pyramid (1992) showing food groups with images of vegetables, fruits, grains, proteins, and dairy.

The traditional food pyramid has been preaching the intensive consumption of carbs for decades throughout American classrooms. In 2011, the USDA retired it and replaced it with a balanced plate model that focused more on vegetables, protein, fruits, and whole grains.

Tongue Map Fake

That well-known tongue map with different areas of taste of sweet, salty, sour, and bitter? Completely false. In fact, humans possess different numbers of taste buds on the entire tongue, with a total capacity of up to 8,000, able to differentiate all varieties of taste at the same time.

Goldfish Remember Everything

Goldfish taught in schools have three-second memories, and this makes them forgetful creatures. In fact, the studies indicate that the goldfish recollect events as long as twelve days. Instead, they were highly and unjustly undervalued by all the classrooms they were given the credit.

Neanderthals Were Smart

Schools portrayed Neanderthals as stupid homo-brutus and cavemen who had merely perished. The discovery in studies that were published in Nature affirms that Neanderthals painted caves in Spain approximately 20,000 years before the arrival of modern man in Europe.

Great Wall Invisible

Students were also assured by their teachers that the Great Wall of China could be seen with the naked eye. This is simply impossible, as clearly confirmed by astronauts in the International Space Station, with intense optical equipment and optimum weather conditions.

Only Four Oceans

World map showing continents and labeled oceans: Pacific, Atlantic, Southern, and Indian Oceans.

Over generations, Americans studied in their geography classes the existence of four oceans in the world. In the year 2000, scientists formally acknowledged the existence of the Southern Ocean of Antarctica as the fifth divergent ocean, redefining geographical textbooks permanently on the whole planet on Earth.

Chameleons Don’t Match

St schools taught us about chameleons that changed color to suit their environment very well. National Geographic confirms that, in fact, they do not actually have many color choices and instead alter color to express their bodily mood and feelings as opposed to their adaptation to the environment.

The dinosaurs were cold-blooded

Dinosaurs of classrooms have been taught for decades to be cold-blooded reptiles like the modern lizards. Recent paleontology is sharply putting forward the possibility that most dinosaurs were, in fact, warm-bodied active animals that bear many more analogies to modern birds than to ancient lizards.

Witches of Salem Hanged

The Salem Witch Trials were detailed in history classes as victims being burned at the stake. History proves that this was never to take place in Salem. The involved were nearly unanimously hanged, with one of the group being hanged to death.
