It All Began In Rogers, Arkansas

Sam Walton opened the first- ever Walmart store on July 2, 1962, in the name Wal-Mart Discount City, at the address 719 W. Walnut Street in Rogers, Arkansas, which served a population of about 5,700 people.

Over Half A Thousand Shoppers Turned Up On The Opening Day

By July 2, 1962, there were over 500 enthusiastic customers already waiting outside the doors before the doors even opened and were eager to check out the brand new 16000 square foot discount shop and the prices they could not beat.

The Store Day One Had 22 Departments

Even the initial flyer of that Walmart had a listing of 22 departments, such as shoes, all clothing, housewares, small appliances, gifts, hair care, and sporting merchandise – all in one store.

Sam Walton Had Not Reached 44 Years

Many people would like to know that at the time when Walmart came into being, Sam Walton was only 44. He is a military veteran that became a retailer who had prior experience with operating Ben Franklin franchise stores and then took a big risk and invested all his money in his dream of opening up a discount store.

It Started Off With The Store Lacking A Formal Logo

Walmart did not have an official logo when it was started in 1962. The font was simply selected by a local printer. Only in 1964 did Walmart take on its first official design that was the Frontier Font Logo.

Kmart And Target Also Opened The Same Year

Walmart was not the only one in 1962. Kmart, Target, and Woolco had also entered the same year. Nevertheless, when competitors concentrated on urban areas and suburbs, Walton made a strategic move to concentrate on the rural towns that were totally ignored by his competitors.

The Design Of The Store Was Motivated By Ann And Hope

The original store of Walmart was a direct imitation of Ann & Hope, an innovative discount retailer of Rhode Island that Walton himself visited in 1961 and made a careful study of how it was laid out and a low-price retail model.

Five Years Later 24 Stores Had Been Opened

The development of Walton was impressive. It took the Walton family only five years to start owning 24 Walmart outlets in the state of Arkansas and the sales revenues of the combined stores amounted to around 12.7 million annually.

Sounding Original Building Remains To The Present

Rogers Walnut Street, the initial 719 W. Walnut Street structure is still present today, albeit, it is currently just a hardware store and an antique mall. Store 1 of Walmart has since grown in the surrounding in the form of a Supercenter.
