Any opportunity Donald Trump gets to splash his name on a building, he takes.

Donald Trump has installed boisterous signage onto the Trump Tower. The 20-foot-tall letters that spell out T-R-U-M-P on the side of his Chicago skyscraper began their installation yesterday… and the city is not happy about it.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel says that he’s looking for a way to undo the “architecturally tasteless” sign, but Trump claims that he got city permission to put the sign up and the city zoning administrator and city council signed off on it.

“If this sign was in Atlantic City or Las Vegas, nobody would care — but it is in Chicago, and in a part of Chicago full of great buildings from the 1920s to the 1960s and onward,” Blair Kamin, a Pulitzer Prize-winning architectural critic for the Chicago Tribune, said.

Not even the John Hancock Center or the Willis Tower have the kind of banner that the Trump International Hotel and Tower has.

“I have the hottest brand in the world right now and there are those who are saying I’m doing Chicago a favor,” Trump said. “I’ve got thousands of people saying, ‘Don’t do anything with the sign.'”
