One popular college job has gone from the provider of a little extra spending money to the provider of an entire education.
Starbucks announced Sunday that they are beginning a partnership with the Arizona State University to provide online education for all of it’s employees.
Yes, other companies will reimburse students for their degree, but with all kinds of limitations. Most often, students need to work for the company for years after education, and be there for years before such a perk is offered.
Starbucks is turning that idea on its head by offering to pay full tuition for employees with two years of credit, and part tuition for those with less (but financial aid will likely cover the rest), basically allowing any employee, from the day they start working, to earn a degree for free.
Starbucks knows this means that employees will eventually leave for better paying jobs, and they’re okay with that. “I believe it will lower attrition, it’ll increase performance, it’ll attract and retain better people,” said Starbucks chairman Howard D. Shultz in an interview with the New York Times.
Hopefully this new program will convince other companies to follow suit and help more people get the degrees they need to get ahead in life. We can’t always say this, but for today… GO STARBUCKS!
