Thankfully, the ice bucket challenge took off and the fire challenge did not.
Patrick Quinn, of Yonkers, NY, and his friend Pete Frates, wanted to raise awareness of ALS, from which they both suffer. They challenged friends to do it from there, and the rest is history.
Within weeks, celebrities were dumping ice on their heads and challenging friends to do the same. Martha Stewart, Justin Timberlake, Jimmy Fallon, Aaron Rodgers, Lil Wayne and Kate Mara have all taken the plunge (and made donations in some cases).
