  • Chile’s Calbuco volcano erupted on Wednesday, releasing a massive cloud of ash and turning the skies red. Over 1,500 residents had to be evacuated from the area. The video above shows the devastating beauty of Calbuco.

Chilean officials have established a 12-mile exclusion zone around the volcano, issuing red alerts to the popular tourist destinations of Puerto Montt and Puerto Varas.

“At the beginning, it was small and later, the cloud grew and later there was a huge cloud over you and true terror starts,” one resident told CNN.

This is the first time in 42 years that Calbuco has erupted.
