  • Sarah Koenig took a break from her bi-week by bi-week reporting on Bowe Berghdal’s disappearance, imprisonment and ultimate release – some of you are still listening to that, right? – to revisit the case that made Serial the most popular podcast in America.

Adnan Syed was in court again on Wednesday, as part of a post-conviction hearing to hear testimony by key witness Asia McClain, who was not contacted by Syed’s defense counsel in 1999.

Syed’s original defense attorney, Christina Gutierrez, apparently determined that “pursuit of Ms. McClain would not be a worthwhile endeavor,” though if her testimony is to be believed, Syed would have been speaking with her in the Woodlawn Public Library at exactly the time prosecutors alleged he would have been murdering Hae Min Lee.

In the first episode of the Season 1 updates, Koenig and Serial producer Dana Chivvis discuss Syed’s hearing, McClain’s testimony, and the feeling in the courtroom that is hearing details of this case for the first time in 16 years.

Episodes 2 and 3 will be released on Thursday and Friday, respectively.

Oh, and if you don’t care about any of this and just want more Berghdal, a new episode of Season Two is also out today.
